Shinkamigoto has a very unique history, with the two most prominent time periods being that of the secret Christians and whaling. While most of the tourism revolves around the Goto Islands' early history, there are still some noteworthy modern historic events in Shinkamigoto.
Parts of the whaling history has been captured in Hokusai The Great's "One Thousand Pictures of the Ocean" (Chie no Umi). "Goto Kujira Tsuki" (1834) depicts the townspeople capturing a whale along the Goto island coast.
